L-Tyrosine question

2004-04-22 09:45:47 PM
A friend of mine is planning to take 500mg a day of L-Tyrosine in order to
get a better tan when we go to the beach this summer. I checked this stuff
out and while it does help your melanin for tanning, it can also act as an
anti-depressant. I told her this, and she told me to investigate more.
Is this stuff safe to take? She has never suffered from depression and
isn't on any medication, so would taking this pill cause mood-swings or any
other ill effects?

Re:L-Tyrosine question

The stuff makes my wife angry as a hornet, contrary to the published
effects. She'll have to try it and see. If it bothers her then she better
quit eating meat.

Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me how many mg's a day your wife takes
(took)?

Re:L-Tyrosine question

500-2000 mg per day. 2000mg in the A.M. once almost got my wife out of a 10
year job until we figured out what was causing it...LOL
For mood effects just keep trying more until you get the effect. For
L-phenylalinine, a precursor to tyrosine you will notice effects within 1/2
to 1 hour. BTW my wife thrives on this one???? She is a much better
personality on phenylalinine and her general health improves

Well, i've taken 8 grams of it with no effect, so i doubt that 500mg
would
have any effect.

Re:L-Tyrosine question

Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid (it can be synthesized within the
body) that is a precursor for epinephrine and norepinephrine. If a
person were depressed due to a shortage of epinephrine, then tyrosine
might help, but it should have no ill effect if there is no shortage,
i.e., it is not acting like prescription antidepressants which block
enzymes to increase neurotransmitter levels, which potentially can
result in too much of a neurotransmitter being present in the brain.

Re:L-Tyrosine question

The risk is the tanning.

Re:L-Tyrosine question

Tyrosine can also be used by the body to manufacture dopamine.
